Equine Skin Conditions

MudFever
Equine skin conditions can be tricky to diagnose and difficult to treat. The cause of skin conditions can in some cases remain unknown with a broad range of possibilities including; viruses, fungal infections, bacterial infections or allergens resulting in an allergic dermatitis. It's almost inevitable that your horse will have some sort of skin problem during its lifetime so Scientific Nutritional Products takes a look the reasons behind common skin conditions and what you as horse owners should do about it! Certain equine management actions can encourage or exacerbate skin conditions. Rain scald can be developed if your equine is exposed to excessive rain without a rug, particularly if they are used to wearing one and thus haven't built up a protective layer of grease in their coats. Mud related skin conditions known as pastern dermatitis, mud rash or mud fever occurs in horses and ponies alike and is often associated with equines standing in mud over the wetter, colder months. Mud caused skin conditions can range from mild skin irritation to painful infected sores which can cause swelling in the limb and lameness. Sometimes the use of certain products such as some insect repellents, shampoos and conditioners can 'disagree' with a horse's skin and result in an allergic flare up. Pollens and some grasses and weeds can also stimulate an allergic dermatitis reaction. Symptoms from an allergic reaction include what are known as hives, or raised bumps on the skin. These lumps and bumps may be sensitive or itchy causing the horse to rub their bodies and tails on objects in the stable and field. If an inhaled irritant such as pollen is causing the problem it may result in coughing or a runny nose. If your horse is sensitive to certain types of pollen applying a nose net when grazing or riding can be useful. Despite the fact sometimes horse owners are left clutching at straws when searching for the reason behind a skin condition it is key to 'know your horse' and pay close attention to the products and stimulus's which produce a skin complaint. It is also beneficial where possible to make appropriate management decisions such as avoiding particularly muddy pasture and feeding a useful supplement such as Mud Manager from Scientific Nutritional Products. Mud Manager contains Zinc, MSM, Biotin, Methionine, proteins and Omega-3 . Soothing cracked and sore skin Mud Manager encourages natural regeneration of skin and hair in the affected area.
