A Look at Hazardous Food for Dogs

A Spring in the Step Reading A Look at Hazardous Food for Dogs 3 minutes Next Diagnosing Equine Lameness

Our dogs are curious creatures often led astray by their stomachs. Though for many dog owners this can create many an amusing story and anecdote BUT the mischief our canine friends get into with food can sometimes be serious. In our latest blog Scientific Nutritional Products takes a look at five common hazardous foods for dogs to be strictly avoided.

1.) The most widely known food toxin to dogs is chocolate. This is because it contains a chemical called theobromine which is similar to caffeine. Dogs are not able to digest theobromine easily so the ingestion of chocolate can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, urinating excessively and panting.

2.) It is not fully understood as to why but grapes, sultanas and raisins are highly poisonous to dogs and their ingestion can result in kidney failure. If your dog eats even just a small amount they will require veterinary attention.

3.) Macadamia nuts are a hazardous food to our canine friends. Thankfully the effects are typically not fatal but they can produce harmful symptoms such as vomiting and tremors.

4.) Common ingredients in household cooking; garlic, onions, leeks and chives are all harmful foods for our dog to consume. These vegetables make up the allium food group and can lead to digestive upsets such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting.

5.) Lactose intolerance is common in dogs so ideally you should not let your dog have any milk, ice cream or other dairy products such as cheese. A lactose intolerance means that your pooch’s digestive system does not have the enzymes to metabolise these foods leading to indigestion and diarrhoea when eaten. Though it won’t cause the severity of symptoms listed above, it can certainly make your dog feel unwell so it is best avoided.

If you think your dog has eaten a toxic foodstuff you should always contact your vet immediately and let them know what they have eaten and how much, as the quantity ingested is also important. The vet will then be able to advise you on a appropriate plan of action.
