Stopping your Dog from Pulling on the Lead

Canine Water Safety Reading Stopping your Dog from Pulling on the Lead 3 minutes

As dog owners we all understand that going out for a walk can be the most exciting part of our canine friends day. Despite understanding their enthusiasm - nonetheless it can be frustrating when your dog is continually pulling on the lead during a walk. In our latest blog Scientific Nutritional Products takes a look at dogs pulling on the lead and what we as dog owners can do about it.

Dogs usually develop the habit of pulling on the lead simply because that is the way they have learned they can behave and get their desired response of moving forward if they do so. Dogs are simply curious about their world and often want to move faster than we do! but for those dog owners looking to break the habit of pulling or new puppy owners that want to train correctly Scientific Nutritional Products shares their advice.

ositive reinforcement is the key to good training. In order to positively reinforce the behaviour that you want i.e your dog walking calmly by your side and limit the behaviour you dont want; your dog pulling on the lead, practicing initially without a lead can be helpful. Using a treat or a toy encourage your dog to walk and stand by your side. Once your dog will reliably follow you - reintroduce the lead and reward your dog and praise them whenever they stay close by your side without pulling. This teaches the lesson that staying close and not pulling forward on the lead pays dividends!

It can be helpful during the training phase to change direction regularly in order to keep your dogs focus on you and what is happening next rather than losing focus and returning to pulling on the lead.

If your dog starts pulling again simply stop walking forward to show to them that pulling on the lead does not yield the desired response or result in a treat or toy being presented. Consistency is key here as if dog owners continue to walk when their dog is pulling on the lead then the lesson is lost in that moment and the dog will likely return to pulling on the lead.
