The Link Between Conformation and Joint Wear in Horses

Conformation, the way a horse is physically put together, plays a significant role in determining how evenly forces are distributed through your Horse's Joints during movement. Understanding your own horse's conformation can help you anticipate where joint stress is most likely to develop over time.

Horses with upright pasterns tend to experience greater concussive force through the lower limb joints, since the natural shock absorbing angle of the pastern is reduced. This can place additional strain on the fetlock and pastern joints over time, particularly in horses working on harder surfaces.

Conversely, horses with very long, sloping pasterns may experience different strain patterns, often placing more stress on the flexor tendons and ligaments alongside the joints themselves. Neither extreme is ideal, and both can predispose a horse to different patterns of wear.

Limb alignment, including conditions such as being "over at the knee" or "back at the knee", changes how weight is distributed through the lower limb joints during each stride. Similarly, horses that are notably cow hocked or bow legged behind will often show asymmetric wear patterns in the hock and stifle over years of work.

Hoof conformation matters here too, since the foot is the foundation the rest of the limb works from. A poorly balanced hoof, whether through natural growth pattern or inconsistent farriery, changes the loading pattern through the entire limb above it, ultimately affecting the joints.

None of this means a horse with imperfect conformation is destined for joint problems. Many horses with less than ideal conformation have long, sound careers, particularly when managed thoughtfully. What conformation does tell us is where to focus our attention. A horse who is notably upright through the pastern, for example, may benefit from proactive joint support earlier in their working life than a horse with more correct, shock absorbing limb angles.

Working with your vet, farrier and physiotherapist to understand your own horse's individual conformation gives you a much clearer picture of where extra support might be valuable. Pairing this understanding with a Horse Joint Supplement such as Horse Joint Right Supreme, alongside correct, balanced farriery, gives your horse the best foundation for a long and comfortable working life regardless of how they are built.

Horse Joint Right Supreme contains optimum levels of Glucosamine for Horses, Chondroitin, MSM, HA and Oils to keep Horses's Joints moving and healthy.
