What to Look for When Choosing a Dog Walker

Prepare in Advance for Muddy Legs Reading What to Look for When Choosing a Dog Walker 4 minutes

Our dogs are a huge part of our daily routine needing regular walks and care. For many of us leading busy lives it can be helpful to build a relationship with a trusted dog walker to help us with a daily dog walk or ad-hoc assistance when needed.  In our latest blog Scientific Nutritional Products takes a look at what to consider when choosing a dog walker.

Our dogs can need plenty of exercise and if your schedule doesnt allow for a sufficient amount mainly due to work committments then a dog walker can offer the ideal solution. This will ensure your canine friend remains fit, healthy and happy.

Ideally a dog walker should have had some kind of training in dog handling and behaviour but for many relying on experience with dogs is sufficient - providing this has been a lengthy period and with a range of different dog breeds, ages and personality types.

When interviewing a prospective dog walker make sure you ask plenty of questions about their experience; both in terms of duration and any training.

All dog walkers should be fully insured with public liability insurance and ideally should hold a canine first aid certificate. Dog walkers should always carry a first aid kit with them and have an action plan in place regarding taking your dog to the vet if an accident happens or if your pet becomes poorly. If there is a specific veterinary practice you would want a dog walker to use in the event of an emergency this should be discussed and agreed in advance. Outlining your approach to veterinary expenses, should they occur, is also wise. or many dog owners discussing whether their dog will be walked alone or in a group will be an important part of forming an agreement. Though dog walkers may need to keep other clients details confidential, if your dog is going to be walked in a group it is beneficial to outline your canine friends temperament around other dogs and any other factors to consider. If your dog is going to be walked solo you can usually specify your needs but if they will be part of a group then logistics maybe more complicated. Finding out the timing and duration of the walk and the distance covered will dictate whether it will be suitable for your dogs age and fitness level.

Many dog walkers will offer treats to bond with your dog and secure a good recall. For some owners they will want to limit the frequency of this and if your dog has dietary needs make sure this is discussed in advance.

Finally getting some reviews or feedback from other dog owners can be really helpful and reassuring. Why not see if your prospective dog walker can provide some testimonials or have a look online to hear more about their service from existing clients?
