Why Omega 3 is good for our Dog

We’d like to talk to you about Omega 3 and its benefits for dogs.

We have done a great deal of research into the use of micro encapsulated fish oil (which is naturally rich in the Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA and EPA), and its use within canine dietary supplements.

There are several benefits of giving Omega 3s to dogs:

Balancing other fats

A primary benefit of giving micro encapsulated fish oil supplementation is its ability to balance out the more inflammatory (yet still necessary) omega-6 fats. Many canine diets contain large amounts of Omega-6 fats, most commonly via grains and plant-based oils, hence micro encapsulated fish oil may be beneficial to balance the canine diet.

Omega 3 deficiency in a dog’s diet may show itself in undesirable ways that include fatigue; a dry coat, (or dry, flaky or itchy skin); and brittle nails. If your dog’s coat looks generally lacklustre, this is a clue.

Other reasons

There are other factors - young dogs and puppies have a higher need for essential fatty acids, as do pregnant and lactating dogs, for example - and canines recovering from injury or chronic disease may warrant extra Omega 3 supplementation. Your vet can advise, if specific issues are afoot.

Joint pain

Older dogs experiencing joint pain may benefit from Omega 3 supplementation. At around seven years of age, dogs are considered to be middle aged, and just like people, many dogs slow down as they mature. Many dogs will become less keen on regular exercise as a result of joint and muscular pain, but the weight gain which follows a decrease in exercise can further exacerbate the problem!

Our Canine Joint Right dog joint supplement is a good, all-round nutritional choice, as it includes the beneficial Omega 3 Fatty Acids DHA & EPA, which as mentioned, are found in micro encapsulated fish oil. (EPA and DHA are important for retinal and immune function in dogs, as well as boosting mobility). These essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be made by the animal’s body, and therefore must come from foods. They help to ease canine movement and aid the circulation, thus allowing the synovial fluid (joint oil) to flow freely over working surfaces of the joint. As we have previously mentioned, other benefits are a healthy canine skin and coat, when Omega 3’s are provided.

Canine Joint Right supplement from Scientific Nutritional Products is also a great source of other key mobility-enhancing compounds, including Glucosamine for Dogs, an amino sugar used to build tendons, ligaments, cartilage and synovial fluid (joint oil), Chondroitin, MSM and Hyaluronic Acid.  A great supplement for all dogs from middle age onwards.
